Jay Jaffe swings by for his typical Wednesday night chat to talk to the Guns about...you guessed it...Sammy Sosa and his Hall of Fame credentials in the wake of the alleged positive steroid test in 2003. Jay compares Sosa's case for the Hall with that of Mark McGwire and laments having to make this such a prominent topic of conversation as it is.
On the Red Sox front, Jay talks about the possible 6 man rotation, what the next move might be for the Sox pitching staff, whether David Ortiz is really coming out of his slump and whether Jacoby Ellsbury is where the hometown team needs him to be for him to be an effective lead-off hitter.

Jeff Erickson, Rotiwire Fantasy Baseball Expert
Jeff Erickson from RotoWire has some good insight for his weekly chat and...believe it or not, no questions about David Ortiz! There are however, some queries on Tom Glavine, should you roster him if, well...a major league team decides to? Roy Halladay, how many more years of this dominance will he have left? Juan Pierre, does he have any post-Manny suspension value? Kevin Youkilis, where does he rank among first basemen?

Jarvis Green, Patriots DE

Jarvis Green joins the Guns on a Friday night to talk some Patriots football as OTAs come to a close. Jarvis shares some thoughts on seeing Tom Brady back out on the field. He also talks about the retirement of Rodney Harrison, and whether the Pats should keep the three defensive linemen whose contracts are coming up (Richard Seymore, Vince Wilfork, and himself) after this year. Jarvis has a good sense of humor, and had a response to the comments by the Dolphins Joey Porter that the AFC East title goes through Miami.
Jarvis and his foundation are putting on a great concert event this Saturday in Seekonk. The Summer Breeze Concert features the U2 cover band the Joshua Tree and the Nate Mott Band. General admission tickets are only $25 and a portion of the proceeds goes to help out the Jarvis Green Foundation aiding low income single mothers. For more information on how to get tickets and support this very worthy cause, visit Jarvis's Web site and follow the links to the Jarvis Green Foundation.
Jay Jaffe, Baseball Prospectus
Jay Jaffe from Baseball Prospectus has some insight to share in this, his weekly chat with the Guns. He discusses the newest sensation, 16 year old Bryce Harper who hit the cover of Sports Illustrated last week and how the guys who project future performance for a living handle projecting someone like this.
He also lists the Red Sox starters he fully trusts right now (the list is not lengthy) and whether there might be a middle of the order bat option on the trade market for the Sox.
Jay also disappoints Chris immensely in his choice of music and in not caring for one of Chris's favorite artists.

Rodney Harrison Hangs it Up

By CHRIS VILLANI
Patriots safety Rodney Harrison officially announced his retirement yesterday after 15 seasons in the NFL. Harrison is set to join NBC's broadcast team, and one has to think he is going to be very successful in that role. Over the years, few have been as straightforward and honest when it comes to speaking about others in the league. At Patriots OTAs, several players commented about their now former teammate.
Richard Seymore said Harrison brought a winning attitude to New England. Teddy Bruschi agreed, even giving Harrison's legacy a doctrine type moniker.
The question many are asking is whether Rodney should be in the Hall of Fame. I for one, say absolutely. First of all, when one thinks of great safeties, there are not many that come to mind before Harrison. Ronnie Lott, probably the best that ever played the position, retired the same season Harrison came into the league, basically leaving the longtime Charger and Patriot essentially peerless when it came to the elite of his position over the past decade and a half.
He has everything you'd need to merit a Hall vote. The numbers: Only player in history to pick up 30 sacks and 30 interceptions. He has the game impact factor: he essentially became a linebacker in the way he was able to move up, be the 8th man in the box, and be one of the best run stoppers in the game. And he has the legacy of one game changing interception after another in 2003 & 2004: the pick of Steve McNair in the AFC divisional game in '03, the interception and forced fumble against the Colts the next week, and the pick-6 of Ben Rothlesburger in the '04 AFC title game.
But no performance stands out more than Super Bowl XXXIX against the Eagles. Wideout Freddie Mitchell had taunted Harrison and said he "had something for him." Well, it was Rodney who had a little something-something for the Eagles, namely 7 tackles, a sack, and a couple interceptions of Donovan McNabb. Bottom line, the Patriots do not win the Super Bowl in '03 or '04 without this guy.
What had never stood out about Harrison's legacy is his 4 game suspension at the beginning of the 2007 season after admitting to using HGH to help recover from injuries, nor the fact that he was voted the dirtiest player in the league multiple times. The lack of a traditionalist, numbers-based culture in football has lead most folks to look the other way when it comes to NFL players on the juice, and rather than seeing Rodney as a dirty player, he'll simply be remembered as a guy who played the game hard and a guy his teammates universally love to play with.
So Rodney, thanks for the memories, thanks for the Super Bowls, we'll see you on NBC soon, and someday...in Canton.
